Frequently Asked Questions About Kindergarten Cut-off Dates
How old does my child need to be to register for kindergarten?
California law recently changed regarding kindergarten cutoff dates. To register for kindergarten in 2013-14 your child will need to be 5 on or before October 1, 2013, and to register in 2014-15, your child will need to be 5 on or before September 1, 2014.
Is the District offering a transitional kindergarten program for students who turn 5 after November 1?
To adhere with the new law, the Redwood City School District is currently offering a Transitional Kindergarten Program at Taft and Fair Oaks during the 2012-13 school year.
How do you register for transitional pre-K?
Registration for transitional pre-K will occur on Saturday, February 2 and throughout the month of February at your assigned neighborhood school. The registration process will be the same as for kindergarten.
If students attend a transitional pre-K class at one of these schools, do they need to continue attending that school for Kindergarten and beyond?
No, students will attend kindergarten at their assigned neighborhood school or school of choice during the following school year.
If students attend a transitional pre-K class at one of these schools, do they get preference for attending that school for kindergarten the following year?
No, when students register for regular kindergarten classes they will register at their home school. Location of the transitional kindergarten program they attended will not be a factor in kindergarten placement.
How will students be assigned to a site?
Families can state a site preference, but there will be no guarantees about which site a student attends for transitional kindergarten. Students will be assigned based on proximity to their home school, when they registered, and space available. Applications will be date stamped, so we recommend that families register early. The District will try to assign students to the school closest to their home, whenever possible. When a site fills, overflow students will be assigned to a site with space available.
What happens if more children register than expected?
Once all registrations are in the District will assess the number of spaces available, and will open additional classrooms, if needed.
Will there be a charge to attend the transitional pre-K class?
No, transitional pre-K will be offered free of charge to students who turn 5 between November 2 and December 2.
What are the hours for transitional pre-K?
The hours will be the match the bell schedule of the kindergarten class at the school where the class is held.
Is transitional kindergarten mandatory for students who turn 5 between November 2 and December 2?
No, it is optional. You may choose to enroll your child in a private pre-school, or wait until the following year to register them for kindergarten.
