      Welcome to a new year!

A Letter from Esther Hollander: our new band and orchestra director

August 18, 2011

Dear Music Families,

I hope you have all had a wonderful and relaxing summer vacation.

I am so excited to be coming to Kennedy Middle School to work with the instrumental music students this year! The Kennedy Middle School bands and strings have developed an outstanding reputation under the leadership of Vivian Euzent, and I am looking forward to continuing the traditions of excellence that are already in place including high quality music instruction, performance opportunities, team building skills, and continued development of a sense of aesthetic value through making music together.

During the next several weeks, I am hoping to meet each one of you as you share your hopes and dreams for our current and future music program. It is my wish that each student will take ownership of his/her place in the music community: offering new ideas, sharing inspiration, and contributing successfully to his/her ensemble.

Feel free to contact me by email: ehollander@rcsdk8.net or by phone: 650-367-4337 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Esther Hollander

Atentamente,

Esther Hollander

Kennedy Middle School offers beginning through advanced band and orchestra classes during the regular school day. Band students learn to play wind and percussion instruments like clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, and drums. Orchestra students play violin, viola, cello, and string bass. Students are encouraged to rent an instrument, but the school also has several instruments available to borrow for students who would prefer. There is no fee to borrow an instrument.

Students are assigned to an ensemble based on their instrument and experience level. The ensembles are:
Cougar Band and Cougar Orchestra – Beginning level
Symphonic Band and Sinfonietta Strings – Intermediate level
Concert Band and String Orchestra – Advanced level

Each ensemble offers multiple performance opportunities including school assemblies, evening performances, and festival performance trips. Please see the events list to get an idea of the performances involved for each group.
Each student will receive a handbook with information about choosing and obtaining an instrument, parent volunteer opportunities, exact performance dates, uniforms, trips, fundraisers, and the nitty-gritty about practicing and grading requirements during the first two weeks of class.

It is not too late to sign up!
Please see Ms. Hollander at Maze Days or contact her by email ehollander@rcsdk8.net or phone 650-367-4337 to make sure that you are included!
