Roosevelt's Project Based Learning Program

J. Russell Kent Award for Project Based Learning

We are extremely proud to announce that Roosevelt’s Project Based Learning program has been awarded the 2012 J. Russell Kent Award by the San Mateo County School Boards Association.

These awards are given to outstanding programs that are being implemented in a school district, county office of education, or in the community college district in San Mateo County.

After submitting information about what Project Based Learning looks like at Roosevelt to SMCSBA, a reviewer spent half a day at Roosevelt. He visited three classrooms and observed their PBL lessons and interviewed students. Afterwards, he met with Mrs. Tsuchiyama and me, Principal Girardi, to ask additional questions and look at documentation of the program. Mr. Tsuchiyama created a video for us, showcasing other PBL units from earlier in the year, which we submitted for review.

We are the only school in the Redwood City School District that has integrated PBL into all classrooms, benefiting all students. We are thrilled to see such hard work recognized by the esteemed SMCSBA.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers, staff and parents who work tirelessly to make Roosevelt’s PBL program a leader in San Mateo County and the Redwood City School District!

School-wide Project Based Learning Program

Upon completing a two year pilot program, the Redwood City School Board approved Project Based Learning (PBL) school-wide beginning in 2010.

Project Based Learning challenges students to reach their academic potential through in-depth investigations, while accessing their multiple intelligences. Students produce, often in small groups, meaningful products such as a presentation, performance, or report. The results are significant improvement in motivation, critical thinking skills,self-esteem, and standardized test scores.

The focus of the PBL program is on science and social studies curriculum.

Our teachers receive PBL training and coaching from the Buck Institute for Education, Project Based Learningfor the 21st Century.
